Hillary Wants Your Guns

(John Hinderaker) Given the Democrats' dismal record when they run on an anti-gun platform, it is hard to believe that Hillary Clinton wants to make gun control her signature issue. Nevertheless, that appears to be the case. Campaigning in Connecticut, she waxed hyperbolic on firearms: I am here to tell you I will use every single minute of every single day if I'm so fortunate enough to be your president looking for

Bullish on the Bard

(Steven Hayward) Today is the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare (it may also be his birthday; his standard biographies merely say he was baptized on April 26, with his exact birthday uncertain), and while the Left has been trying to kill off Shakespeare for a long time now, they haven't succeeded. I argue that the best insights on Shakespeare today are to be found from . . . conservative political

Traces of Tolkien

In 2003, after a long-running poll, the BBC announced that readers considered The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien's three-volume fantasy tale, the greatest British novel of all time—a result wonderful to report, probably accurate about contemporary readers' taste, and entirely absurd. Anyone who doesn't love Tolkien isn't much of a reader. But, then, neither is anyone who thinks The Lord of the Rings the greatest novel ever written.

In an art form so wide-ranging that it includes everything from the works of Jane Austen to the books of Fyodor Dostoyevsky—from David Copperfield to Naked Lunch, Madame Bovary to The Stranger—Tolkien has to rank somewhere.
