Woman barred from all-male panel: Using contraception makes me qualified

Sandra Fluke testifies on contraception

A woman who was recently excluded from a House Oversight Committee hearing on contraception says she was qualified to testify because unlike the all-male panel of witnesses, she actually uses birth control.
Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) said at the time that he had rejected Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke because she was “not found to be appropriate or qualified,”dismissing her as someone who “appears to have become energized over this issue.”
During a special House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee hearing on Thursday, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) finally gave Fluke a chance to respond.
“I will confirm that I was energized,” she stated as the committee erupted in laughter. “As you can see from the reaction behind me, many women in this country are energized about this issue.”
“In terms of whether or not I was an appropriate witness, I felt insulted not for myself, but for the women I wanted to represent, the women whose stories I wanted to convey to the committee, and the women whose voices were silenced that day,” Fluke explained, adding “I’m an American woman who uses contraception, so let’s start right there. That makes me qualified to talk to my elected officials about my health care needs.”
Because of its roots as a Catholic and Jesuit university, Georgetown does not provide contraception as a part of health care for students. An Obama administration mandate aims to change that.
Fluke said she would have told the Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee how the lack of birth control coverage had impacted students on campus.
“My testimony would have been about women who have been affected by their policy, who have medical needs and have suffered dire consequences,” she explained to The Washington Postearlier this month.
“The committee did not get to hear real stories I had to share, about actual women who have been dramatically affected by this policy.”

KRAUTHAMMER EMBARRASSED BY SCALE OF U.S. APOLOGY FOR KORAN BURNING, ASKS WHEN ISLAMIC NATIONS WILL APOLOGIZE FOR THE KILLING OF CHRISTIANS

Krauthammer Asks When Islamic Nations Will Apologize for the Killing of Christians
Appearing on Fox News’ Special Report Friday, conservative Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer was blunt in his opinion of U.S. Defense and White House officials emphatically apologizing to Muslims for the burning of Korans that took place on a NATO base early this week.
“That was embarrassing what we saw. We have gone from apology here to abject self-debasement and groveling, and groveling to whom? To the mob,” Krauthammer said in reaction to remarks made by acting Assistant Defense Secretary Peter Lavoy Friday. ”We should have had a single apology coming from the commander on the ground and that’s it. Not from the Secretary of Defense, not from the President of all people”
Thousands of angry Afghans have been protesting since Tuesday when word spread that the Islamic holy book and other religious materials were inadvertently burned by U.S. forces at a NATO military base in Afghanistan. Since the anti-U.S. demonstrations began Tuesday, hundreds have been wounded and at least 28 people have been killed, including two Americans.
Krauthammer cited the hypocrisy in the immediate apology to Muslims all over the world for the accidental yet inappropriate disposal of Korans, compared to the unequal reaction from Muslim leaders to atrocities committed against Christians in the name of radical Islam:
“This is a world in which nobody asked the Islamic Conference, a grouping of the 56 Islamic countries, to issue an apology when Christians are attacked and churches are burned in Egypt or in Pakistan. And had we heard a word from any Islamic leader anywhere about the radical Muslims in Nigeria who are not only burning the churches, but burning women and children who are in the churches, when I hear that, I’ll expect my president to start issuing apologies.”

Pep the Dog Mug shot from the Eastern State Penitentiary:

Pep the Dog

A great piece of history this morning, from the Eastern State Penitentiary:
"Pep, The Cat-Murdering Dog" was a black Labrador Retriever admitted to Eastern State Penitentiary on August 12, 1924. Prison folklore tells us that Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot used his executive powers to sentence Pep to Life Without Parole for killing his wife’s cherished cat. Prison records support this story..."

Glenn Beck says family has received multiple threats since moving to Texas

Glenn BeckConservative pundit Glenn Beck said Thursday that his family has faced multiple threats since moving to Texas but also noted that he’s happy that he moved to the state.
Beck’s family moved from New York City to Westlake last year.
On Thursday, while interviewingRepublican presidential candidate Rick Santorum for his online show in his studio in Las Colinas, Beck touched on how being in the public eye has impacted his life.
"One of the reasons why we moved out of New York is my family was being brutalized," Beck said. "But even here, we've had...5 now attempts in 4 weeks on the family and it's just part of it."
Beck did not elaborate on the nature of the "attempts." A spokesman for Beck declined to comment. Keller Police, which handles law enforcement for Westlake, said it did not have any record of any threats reported by Beck.
Also Thursday, on his radio show, Beck spoke at length about how happy he is to have left New York for Texas.
"I feel so good to be in Texas right now," Beck said. "You know what I think it is it"s not depressing here. It's like there's hope...Every place else you're watching the destruction of your country. Here it feels good. So those in Texas don't be deceived."
Late last year, Beck announced plans to hold an inspirational event called Restoring Love on July 28 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. He has encouraged supporters around the country to travel to North Texas to attend.

You don't pay. You can't play.
I'm going to sound harsh here.
But time for a little reality here.
Everyone has to pay taxes.
Everyone.
I don't care how much, or how little.
But something. Anything.
Everyone.
Here's why.
This new report out of The Heritage Foundation...
That reveals 49 and a half percent of us aren't paying any income taxes at all.
Many pay Social Security and Medicare taxes....and depending on where they live, property taxes too.
That's fine. Join the club.
Here is what is not.
Not paying any "income" taxes.
I take nothing away from those genuinely poor and unable to pay...
But you can't tell me 49 and a half percent of us are unable to come up with so much as a penny to pay?
Nearly 50 percent?
I'll spot you five percent. Maybe go as high as ten percent.
But half?
More like "half-assed."
I'm telling you, we can't change this game unless "everyone" has skin in the game.
"Some" skin. "any" skin.
And if you don't, don't speak.
And certainly, don't demand.
Just because you're entitled to our government doesn't mean you're entitled to bash the folks who are paying for that government.
They're paying your freight.
It'd be like being treated out to dinner, ordering the most expensive thing on the menu, a pricey bottle of wine, to boot...then bitching to the host about how much of a tip he left.
Stop.
Stop arguing for the rich paying their fair share...and saying nothing about the now half of all Americans who pay no share, at all.
Stop demanding benefits from a system you give nothing.
And then have the nerve to bitch at the very folks paying darn near everything.
Forget about "fair share." how about a "fair debate"?
Where we put the facts on the table and keep the class warfare stuff off the table.
Where we talk about everyone pulling the boat, and not a president simply pulling our leg.
Where we focus on the government and what's become of it.
And not whether a select few should pay more for it.
How about everybody pay at least something for it?
Because when you have skin in the game, guess what?

ARIZONA SHERIFF PAUL BABEU QUITS ROMNEY CAMPAIGN AFTER ALLEGATIONS BY GAY LOVER

Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu Quits Romney Campaign After Allegations by Gay Lover
AP
FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) — A sheriff seeking the GOP nomination for an Arizona Congressional seat was forced Saturday to confirm he is gay amid allegations of misconduct made by a man with whom he previously had a relationship.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu on Saturday denied claims he tried to threaten the man, a Mexican immigrant and a former campaign volunteer, with deportation if their past relationship was made public. The man’s allegations were first published Friday in The New Times, a Phoenix alternative weekly magazine.

Babeu, a first-term sheriff who has risen to national prominence with his strong opposition to illegal immigration and smuggling, said the accusations were an attempt to hurt his political career.
He vowed to continue his campaign in Arizona’s rural western 4th Congressional District seat, but said he had called presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s staff to say he would step down from his post as state campaign co-chair.
“This whole rumor, this whole of idea of who I am in my private life has been shopped around,” Babeu told reporters during an hour-long press conference Saturday in front of his sheriff’s office. “This was a way, the hook, of how this could be brought out, and to malign and attack a sheriff who does stand for conservative principals, who does enforce the law.”
The lawyer for the man, Melissa Weiss-Riner, did not returns calls or emails from The Associated Press on Saturday, but told The New Times that Babeu’s attorney and campaign consultant falsely told her client that his visa had expired. Babeu told reporters he believed the man, identified only by his first name Jose, was living in the country legally.
The New Times posted a photo provided by the man of the two embracing. It also posted a cell phone self-portrait of a smiling Babeu in his underwear and another of what appears to be the shirtless sheriff in a bathroom, posted on a gay dating website. The man provided the magazine with photos of himself and Babeu and text messages between the two.

The congressional district where Babeu is seeking election runs from western Arizona through Prescott and south to take in parts of Pinal County south of Phoenix. Its voters are heavily Republican and generally very conservative.
Babeu issued a sweeping denial of any wrongdoing in front of his headquarters. The press conference was attended by about three dozen high-ranking uniformed deputies, local elected officials and citizens.
“I’m here to say that all the allegations that were in the story were untrue — except for the instance that refers to me as gay,” Babeu said. “That’s the truth — I am gay.”
Babeu, who is not married, said he had been in a relationship with Jose that ended sometime before September. Jose also ran his campaign website and Twitter account, and Babeu said he began posting derogatory items on the sites after their breakup.
Babeu said he had his lawyer contact Jose and demand that he stop and turn over passwords allowing access to the sites. Babeu said the postings and actions amounted to identity theft but that he chose to deal with the matter privately through his lawyer.
Babeu is taking on an incumbent tea party Republican who switched districts and state Sen. Ron Gould, a conservative from northwestern, in Arizona in August’s 4th District primary.
Gould said he believed Babeu’s posting of pictures on what the lawmaker called a “homosexual hookup website” were a “Congressman Weiner type of moment.”

“The real issue here is the poor judgment of a government official, posting those kinds of photos on a public website,” Gould said. “I think that shows a lack of good judgment.”
He also said he believes Babeu’s sexual orientation would hurt him in the district. Gould sponsored Arizona constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman, an amendment he said drew extremely strong support in the rural counties he and Babeu seek to represent.
Babeu said he has never defined himself based on his ethnicity or sexual orientation, and he would continue to focus on unemployment and the federal deficit in his campaign.
“What I’m trying to do is (be) as forthright as possible, talking about deeply personal, private matters, and trying to be upfront,” Babeu said. “The disclosure of that information is something that I feel no American should have to do.”
Babeu acknowledged that he has sent and posted the photos, but said they were personal. When asked if posting such pictures on a public website showed poor judgment for a public official, he reiterated that he believed they were personal.
