As eSports popularity explodes, betting needs to be regulated

Fans watch as screens show Yang Jin Hyeob, a professional video-game player, competing against Jeong Se Hyun, not pictured, during the final round of the Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) Sports FIFA Online Championship at the Nexon Co. e-Sports Stadium in Seoul, South Korea, on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015. Video game competitions, known as eSports, have been expanding as gamers seek to shift perceptions around their craft from a basement hobby to a serious money making industry. Photographer: Jean Chung/Bloomberg via Getty Images Esports betting has boomed in the last five years, attracting investments from celebrities, investors and entrepreneurs like Mark Cuban and Ashton Kutcher — even the former NBA Commissioner, David Stern, has talked about it on many forums. Gambling in eSports has charmed stakeholders but it may have created a monster in the gaming industry. As with every growing industry, it's… Read More

Cinemapocalypse Now?

apocalypse-now Let's talk box office! Because it's one of my pet obsessions; I've long been curious how the rise of new entertainment tech (Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, Pokémon Go) will impact movies, our oldest and most storied cultural commons. And because I was trawling through Box Office Mojo's numbers, as you do, and happened to stumble across something which makes me fear for… Read More

A circular satnav designed to blend in with a scooter

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Like Garmin, TomTom's been getting pretty aggressive with its wearable strategy. No wonder, really – it's a space that's seen exponential growth over the past few years, as in-car GPS systems have, at best, flatlined, thanks to the near ubiquity of smartphones. But TomTom's not giving up the ghost. The company's been playing around in the space to see what,… Read More

Missing in Iran

The world is full of amateurs and fools, bumbling their way into dim alleys or falling off the docks into dark water. But maybe the saddest cases are found among the people who actually have some skill: the people who did one job well, productively filling a career, and then decided that their success in one field equipped them for success in another.

The problem, I think, is that competent people often think of competence as a general kind of talent, applicable to anything to which they might turn their hand. Unfortunately, competence often proves less fungible and more particular than we like to imagine. To have done one job well doesn't guarantee an ability to do some other job just as well.
